Charterhouse of Padula, a Baroque masterpiece

The Charterhouse of Padula, also known as the Certosa di San Lorenzo, is one of the largest monastic complexes in Europe and a masterpiece of Baroque architecture. It is located in the town of Padula, in the province of Salerno, in the Campania region of southern Italy. The Certosa of Padula was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1998.

The construction of the Charterhouse of Padula began in 1306, when Thomas II Sanseverino, count of Marsico, decided to establish a Cistercian monastery in the area. Over the centuries, the Charterhouse was expanded and enriched with new buildings and works of art. It was an important spiritual, cultural and economic center in the region.

The Carthusian Monastery of Padula is known for its majestic Baroque architecture, with an imposing facade and a series of ornate courtyards, cloisters, corridors, and halls. The complex occupies an area of more than 51,500 square meters and is one of the largest monasteries in the world. It is surrounded by beautiful gardens and cloisters, including the Great Cloister, the Small Cloister, and the Laundress Cloister. These green spaces offer a tranquil oasis of peace and reflection, where visitors can stroll and admire the beauty of the place; houses a rich library that preserves ancient manuscripts, illuminated codices, ancient books and other literary works. The library was an important center of study and research for the monks and houses an extensive collection of artwork and precious objects.


Inside the Charterhouse of Padula are several churches and chapels decorated with Baroque frescoes, sculptures and altars. The Church of San Lorenzo, the Church of San Giuseppe and the Prior's Chapel are just some of the religious structures in the complex.

The Carthusian Monastery of Padula also houses several museums that showcase the history, art, and culture of the region. Among the most important museums are the Archaeological Museum, the Codex Museum, and the Carriage Museum.
